Oh this song! I loved it so much. Every once in a while I listen to it on Youtube and I swear it brings me back to the 90s. I gotta tell you…I’m starting to feel really old you guys! I am starting to say things like “music ain’t what it used to be” and I actually mean it. You know what? I cannot relate to any of the music I hear on the radio lately. I mean, I like some tracks but there isn’t ONE song I have felt the need to actually BUY in a long time. ANYWAY…
Shades was an all girl group that rose to moderate fame during the mid-end-90s. They did not have many hits unfortunately, but I feel like the really deserved more shine. Serenade was the second single from their first (and only) album and it peaked at #88 in 1997 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. They also had another very hot track called Tell Me (I’ll be around) that also did not get the shine it deserved, mainly because another great song from the 90s used the same sample (of “Who Do You Love” by Bernard Wright) and was more successful. It was Ll Cool J & Total’s Loungin’…a song that I loved as well and that I will have to review too because the video clip was fire.
Back to Shades and Serenade. It is a very simple and clean video with shots of the 4 ladies dancing and singing. There are shots of them dancing in romantic and flowy outfits
Others of them dancing in sexy menswear inspired pantsuits and hats
Another shot of them lying down on glass wearing fun and colorful crop tops, flower petals falling down on them from the sky
And obviously every lady gets her own moment. And that’s where most of the beauty statements are made
As I told you in the previous post of Beauty in Music, I was in LOVE with short hair when I was a teenager and to this day it is my favorite hairstyle. Two ladies from Shades had gorgeous short hairdos
The other two ladies from the group went with bolder looks
Other than loving the song, I loved how naturally beautiful the ladies looked. Their makeup was not overdone, they were not dressed in an overly sexy manner. Everything looked fresh, beautiful, feminine and romantic. When I looked at them I recognized the woman that I wanted to look like in the future. And like with Gabrielle in Dreams, I feel like their look is still current. There isn’t much (maybe except for the size of their heels) that would be considered a total fashion faux-pas today.
Did you know Shades? What are the videoclips YOU liked when you were a teenager? Let me know in the comments
