By now you must all have heard about BB Creams. They first became popular in Asia and now our favorite drugstore brands are coming out with their own version of this product that is supposed to make your life easier by addressing more than one skin concern at a time.
If you have read some of my other reviews, you might have noticed that I am a bit of a high maintenance girl. I use a moisturizing treatment, a serum, a sunscreen, a primer, then a foundation and a setting powder for my skin to be up to the standards that I have set for myself. But when I am on vacation I like to take time off from this heavy routine and, this year, the timing was perfect: right before packing my bags to go on vacation I received Maybelline’s Dream Fresh 8-in-1 Beauty Balm to review.
The first couple of days on vacation I was still using my moisturizing treatment, serum, sunscreen and primer but I quickly got tired of this routine (mainly because it is so hot here, if I take too much time my make-up starts melting off my face before I’m done) but a few days in, I replaced all 4 of those products with the Dream Fresh BB. I just apply concealer on a couple of dark spots then set it all with a pressed powder foundation (one with enough coverage like MAC’s Studio Fix Pressed Powder or Bailey Cosmetic’s Duo Foundation Powder) and am ready to go. This is seriously making my life much easier.
Maybelline’s Dream Fresh Beauty Balm is presented as a “8-in-1 Skin Perfector” that blurs imperfections, brightens and evens skin-tone, smoothes and hydrates skin while protecting it from the sun with an SPF 30 (Titanium Dioxide). It is also oil-free so all the oily skin and acne-prone girls like me can use it without fear.
Now, don’expect a lot of coverage. Don’t expect your skin to magically transform and become perfect. But this product does help create a great canvas for your makeup application and if you’re one to only apply a tinted moisturizer, it is a great alternative.
It comes in 5 shades
I am using Deep which is ok for me. It is a maybe a tiny bit too light but it does blend in beautifully when I work it into my skin with my fingers. It offers very little coverage but it does even out a little bit. If you already have an even skin tone it might be all you need. And for all those who need more coverage, it still s a great alternative when you’re on vacation and need to pack light or simply for those mornings where you do not have the time to go through your five steps routine.
The only other BB Cream I can compare it to is the Estée Lauder BB Cream which, obviously is not in the same price range (the Estée Lauder will set you back 38$). I would say that I prefer Maybelline’s product mainly because 1. it comes in my shade (Estée Lauder’s comes in Light and Medium…Medium being a shade that might even be too light for Jennifer Lopez…) 2. it costs close to 20$ less. But then again, it’s difficult to compare a drugstore brand to Estée Lauder (which adds a myriad of anti-oxydants such as such as Alpha-lipoic acid, Kinetin, Vitamin C, Vitamin E, Coenzyme Q10 and Idebenone to their BB Cream thus justifying the price tag…) but when it comes to how it feels on my face and the benefits it procures me, I have to say that the Maybelline Beauty Balm does a great job as far as I am concerned.
The Maybelline Dream Fresh 8-in-1 Beauty Balm costs 10.49$. Buy it online on Well.ca
