I will have to finally admit it. Lately I have greatly lacked motivation and drive. I have been lazy, tired, and not interested in make up in the least. My cosmetics budget has been almost untouched in the past months and I have dozens of products I have to and want to review…but I couldn’t get around to reviewing…no matter how bad I felt every time I looked at that box filled with cosmetics.
Why you ask? Well here it is ladies: I am with child! Yay! And the past few months have been all about pregnancy and babies. That is all I could think about & care about. Plus there was obviously the nausea and the fatigue which didn’t help. So, pretty much, all I could deal with was going to work and getting back home. No extra energy for anything else. So there’s that. Now that I am (thank God) over the first trimester things are slowly getting better and I am getting some appetite and energy back, and with that some of my interest in makeup! The first product that got my attention is Make Up For Ever’s Aqua Rouge. I received one of the Summer 2013 new shades, 16 Fuchsia, and was, initially, a bit skeptic. I mean this is a bright fuchsia. I was afraid this would be the type of product I’d have to try only at home with my husband giving me the “Don’t you dare leave the house with this lipstick on” look. But that was before I tried it and not only fell in love with the color but also with the formula.
But before I get into the review, here’s what MUFE has to say about this product
AQUA ROUGE’s professional formula offers:
-Extremely intense color and total coverage thanks to the high concentration of pigments.
-An easy-to-apply product with Mineral Powder (Mica): in the form of thin layers, it improves the glide and the intensity of the colors.
-A velvety texture, thanks to the gelling agents, which offer a soft touch and a real feeling of comfort.
-Extra-long waterproof hold from the Volatile Oils and Polymers that create a fine film that lastingly fixes the color.
So to make a long story short, MUFE’s Aqua Color is a two-step dual-ended lip cream and lip gloss that promises intense waterproof color that lasts all day and that will feel comfortable all day. Does Aqua Rouge deliver? Well, the short answer is: yes it does.
As you can see in the swatch below the color comes in the form of a lip cream. Applied with a foam applicator, the product then dries matte and is then very difficult to remove, unless you’re working with an oily makeup remover. For the initial test of the product I only applied the color, and did not top it with the gloss to see how it performed on its own. I wanted to see if it would be difficult to apply evenly (in case it dried too quickly), or if it would wear off in patches, or if it would simply make my lips feel dry. Those are issues I had with too similar products: Maybelline’s Superstay 24 Color Lipstick and NYX’s Soft Matte Lip Cream. Although they are both drugstore products and really shouldn’t be compared to MUFE, I still wanted to make sure MUFE would perform better that both those products.
Well, the result is without contest. Not only the lip cream itself is extremely easy to apply and blend evenly (contrary to some reviews I read on makeupalley) but you can decide how opaque or intense the color will be, which made the very bright fuchsia very wearable for me (I wore it to work on multiple occasions). With one swipe, I got the result you can see on my lips below.
On the full face picture I am wearing it matte and it is actually the way I prefer to wear it. My lips stay moisturized and the longevity is obviously fantastic. I also tried it with the lip gloss on and it looks really nice with the coat of shine too. The lip gloss obviously wears off much quicker and you will have to retouch it if you want your lips to be shiny all day, but the color will-not-move-all-day-long. No fading, no nothing. You can eat, drink, kiss, hell you can even shower. To remove it, you will have to put your back into it and rub your lips with an oil-based makeup remove. It’s that serious.
Now, I have not used many Make Up For Ever products but, for the first time in a few months, I want to go to Sephora and shell some of my hard earned cash on other shades.
As I said earlier I have read reviews of ladies having a hard time applying the lip cream evenly. The only reason I can think of is that maybe they applied more than one coat at a time. What I would suggest it that you apply lip balm (make sure your lips are not dry or scaly), blot it off, then apply your lip pencil, rub your lips together. Then one coat of Aqua Rouge, blend with the lip pencil. Wait for a minute for it to dry. If you want more intense color, then apply another coat, rub your lips together to blend, let dry. And so on. I think that should help.
In my case, since I applied just one coat of the fuchsia, I really had no issues at all making sure the product would be distributed evenly.
So, no surprise, I’m giving this product 10s across the board.
It retails for 24$ at Sephora and I think it is quite reasonable for what you get. Aqua Rouge is now available in 17 shades. See them all here
