I had been looking for a primer for a while. I went all over the web, searched for the best and first tried the L’Oréal Paris Studio Secrets Smoothing Resurfacing Primer which many YouTube makeup gurus seemed to love. I did not repurchase it… What I was looking for was a primer that would make my skin look smoother, my pores smaller, any line less visible and would avoid my face getting so oily only 2 or 3 hours after applying my makeup. Honestly, I usually started shining like a disco ball by noon and I wasn’t having it! So when the brand new Sephora store opened in Montreal, I went on a mission to get a primer that would suit my needs. A fabulous makeup consultant immediately brought me to the Hourglass counter a started raving about the Veil Mineral Primer. I had never heard of Hourglass and wasn’t liking the price (52.00$ for a 30 ml/1 oz. bottle) at all. But I was willing to give it a try because the consultant was so excited about it AND because there was a smaller size available that cost 21.00 $ CAD. The consultant also assured me that it would go a long way since you only need a pump for your whole face. Two weeks after buying it I can say that this is the best primer I have ever used.
Hourglass Veil Mineral Primer SPF 15 is a water-resistant oil-, fragrance-, paraben-, gluten-, sulfate-, phthalate-free and vegan, mineral primer formulated with SPF 15. It promises to:
- minimize the appearance of large pores and fine lines
- prep skin for makeup application while extending its durability
- protect skin from uva/uvb rays with naturally-derived titanium dioxide and zinc oxide
And as far as I am concerned, it delivers on all fronts. The primer has a thin cream/gel like consistency, comes out white. It does leave a bit of a white residue on my skin but when absorbed it disappears. It contains silicones and I know that some people do not like primers with silicone. I have never had any problems with any and I did not have any breakouts with this product either.
When applying, it glides on my skin and leaves a satin finish. My skin feels so silky and soft after application and I apply my foundation quickly and easily for a smooth mat finish. The pores around my nose appear much smaller, the smile lines that usually form on my face are not as visible and, although I still have bit of shine by noon, it is dramatically decreased. I just have to blot my t-zone a bit around lunch time, but it’s not like the grease attacks I used to get.
Also, it has significantly increased the longevity of my makeup. Both foundation and blush stay put for a good 2 to 3 hours more. When I add a setting spray (such as Urban Decay’s De-slick) it goes even further and my make up does not move until I decide to remove it. And it stays beautiful all day.
I bought the smaller size, 10 ml/0.33 oz for around 21$ at Sephora and I think it should last at least 2 months. I’ll update the post when I finish it to tell you exactly how long it lasts with daily use.
Let me know if you try it and what is your favorite primer.
