Well who would have thought I would finally incorporate a toner in my routine. I have always been a skeptic when it comes to toners. It’s probably because I had rarely noticed a true and dramatic improvement in my skin after using one.
See…as much as I am a beauty addict I am very lazy when it comes to my skin care. I like a skin care routine to have as little products as possible or, as it turns out, I will tolerate a few extra steps if I can really see how they’re making my skin better. So among all the toners I have used, some have been good but none have made such a huge difference on my skin as the simplest of them all: a mix of 1 part apple cider vinegar and 1 part witch hazel. That’s it. Every day. Twice a day. After washing my face and before applying a serum (right now it is the Hypnotic Skinssentials Evanish Serum).
What has it helped me achieve? It has helped tremendously in dealing with acne and with dark spots. Dark spots that would usually take over 6 months to vanish, now are gone in 2 to 3 months, it’s great.
After application my skin feels soft, supple, moisturized. My pore appear to have shrunk and overall my complexion is just brighter.
Why does it help?
The apple cider vinegar has antibacterial and antiseptic properties. It also naturally balances the skin with its pH of 3, which helps restore the skin’s natural pH.
As far as the witch hazel goes, in addition to being an astringent, it is also a disinfectant. It will, therefore do a good job of cleansing the skin without over drying or irritating it. As a disinfectant witch hazel can reduce the amount of bacteria on the face and in the pores, helping to reduce or halt future breakouts while healing any current pimples or infections in the skin.
This combination has worked very well for me and I am very happy about it. It’s natural, it’s cheap, it’s effective…what’s not to love?
Now the only issue I should point out is that it does not smell good, but some articles I have read recommend adding in some essential oils. Personally I have gotten used to the smell but my husband comments on how bad it smells every day lol. He says it smells like stinky feet and he is 100% correct. BUT the way to fix this is simply to apply a serum or moisturizer that does smell good on top of it and that will therefore mask the smell. But honestly I love this toner so much I’m just waiting for him to get used to it and that’ll be it!
